Now that you have a page on the Web, you've got to let the world know about
it. How are people going to find you? By searching in the huge databases
that are popping up all over the internet. The following list is designed to
let you quickly and easily contact the submission pages of search engines,
catalogs, and databases where the world looks for sites like yours.
Before you begin, take a minute to prepare the data you will be submitting. Put
it where you can easily cut and paste it into the forms you will be filling out
at each of these sites.
You will need:
- Your exact URL (Test it!)
- Your e-mail address.
- A brief description of your site.
- In one concise sentence.
- In a 25 word summary.
- In a 75 word paragraph.
That done, you will be able to quickly and accurately provide the information
and description that will be requested by most of these submission sites. Whenever possible, these links will take you directly to the page where you can submit your URL.

These sites allow you to fill out one form, and then submit it to many search engines and listings for you.
- Submit It!
"Submit It! is a free service designed to make the process of submitting your URLs
to a variety of WWW catalogs faster and easier. Register with over 15 different catalogs,
but fill out just one form! After you submit the completed form Submit It! will return
a page with submission buttons for all the sites you selected. All of your information
will be encoded in that page and no more typing will be necessary. Use that page to
register your site with the catalogs. Scott Banister's Submit It! is a real gem. A great
place to start your adventure. Just keep track of which places you've submitted to
with the automatic pages, it will save you multiple submissions later.

These are the Big Databases, The Best Search Engines, and the Busiest Sites
-
Alta Vista Web Search
"ALTA VISTA is the result of a research project started in the summer of 1995 at Digital's
Research Laboratories in Palo Alto, California. By combining a fast Web crawler with scalable
indexing software, the team was able to build a large index of the Web in the Fall of 1995.
After two months of internal testing, we produced an even larger index consisting of the
full text of over 16,000,000 pages. We made the site public on the 15th of December 1995.
Within three weeks of launch, we were handling over two million HTTP requests per day."
This is the best search engine on the Web. It's so good, it will change the way the business
is done on the internet. You simply must be listed here.
- Excite NetSearch
"Please note: it's sufficient to send us a single link to your site (preferably the
home page). Our spider can find related links automatically." They are one of the largest
(more than 1.5 million pages) web databases. Nice search engine, quick with good presentation
results.
- InfoSeek
"If you would like Infoseek to index a particular site, please send e-mail to
www-request@infoseek.com. Please include
the site's full URL including "http://". This service comes in two flavors. Infoseek
Guide allows a free search of Web pages, Usenet newsgroups, FTP and Gopher sites.
Infoseek Professional is a fee based search through a comprehensive selection of business,
computer, and medical information.
- Inktomi Search Engine
"The Inktomi Search Engine is the first fast web indexer with a large database. December
29: The new database of 2.8M documents is online!" Accepts URLs for later check.
Wired Magazine gave its nod to this one. One of the largest databases of sites on the net.
- Internet Mall
"Ready to join the Internet Mall? You'll first need to ensure that you meet our membership
criteria: 1.You have a tangible product or service that you sell. 2.Potential customers can
find out more about your product and order it through the Internet. Excluded are Internet
service providers, any multi-level marketing schemes, franchise opportunities, products
available through a distributorship, Web publishing or design services, Internet commercial
or marketing services, and events, hotels, restaurants or other non-business sites."
No charge for basic listing, but you can "sponsor a department or floor" for greater exposure.
- Lycos - The catalog of the Internet
"You may schedule your own URLs (or nominate other URLs) for exploration by Lycos.
There is no guarantee that a registered URL will remain in the Lycos catalog." Lycos
claims to index over 90% of the web. Your URL belongs here.

Magellan: McKinley's Internet Directory
"Over 30,000 reviewed, rated, and indexed Web pages. Please list up to 4 keywords that
best describe the contents of your site. Please list up to 4 audiences that best
describe the people who will use your site." Reviewed sights have a star rating system
and 'Magellan's Green Light' appears next to reviewed sites that have no apparent material of
an adult nature. You can also search the unrated sites, which, on my last search, out numbered
the rated sites 65:1.
- NCSA What's New
"The following is a guide to what NCSA will and will not accept for What's New. Because
of increasingly stringent selection guidelines, fulfillment of What's New criteria does not
guarantee inclusion on the page. Submissions should be considered candidates for inclusion.
What's New: Multilevel sites, Content-rich company home pages, Original content sites, Tasteful,
artistic sites, Broad appeal, New or significantly redeveloped sites. What's NOT: Single-page
sites, Single product promotions, Personal home pages, Sexually explicit or offensive sites,
Sites Limited scope, Previously submitted sites." Worth a try...
- NetMall
"Become a resident in NetMall and watch your business grow. Over 10,000 businesses are
happily listed and we are currently growing at a rate of 1,200 per month. Don't be left out!
...Don't forget to write down your password for easy updating." No charge for a basic
listing.
-
New Riders' Official WWW Yellow Pages
"Just fill out the form below, and you'll be notified if your entry has been approved to
be added. Please be patient! We go through submissions every day! Your entry won't appear
in the Yellow Pages until after it is approved." And they publish a nice book too.
-
Open Market's Commercial Sites Index.
"We list companies, institutions, or organizations with a presence on the World Wide Web,
not individual products or services." With 22,000 business listings, they may not
be the largest site, but they post your submission quickly and have a nice search interface.
- Point Top 5% Index
"Thanks for taking the time to nominate a Web site for Point's Top 5% list. We'll take a
look at it, and if we select it to be rated and reviewed, we'll notify you. Please remember
to inc
